I have completed my first power carving project with my new Dremel 400. It took a while to get it completed as I was adjusting to the transition to power, fussing with equipment and trying to make sense of burrs and what they do. The piece itself is Western Red Cedar and that in itself was challenging due to it's celery like grain. When it came to a finish I was at a loss as I wanted to allow the Cedar smell to remain and keep it simple. I experimented with hot Parafin Wax and dipping the piece till I saw bubbles coming out of the wood and could tell the wax had gone deep. I then simply let it cool, lightly scraped all excess and runs and drips off and then buffed till it got a satin look about it. Maintenance will be as simple as using Carnuba car wax if ever needed or even re-dipping. This was another first for me as the piece was a "glue up" and I fussed for ages getting as neat a fitting joint as I possibly could before gluing and clamping. I made a little boo-boo with grain alignment but maintain that it adds an interesting twist to the piece (lol darn it!). I still like my hand tools as this can be done without the need for electricity but the Dremel adds another string to the learning bow. |

It's awesome! What size is it? You've inspired me to get my 400 dremel out and carve some more!

Middle daughter Grace knows she is getting it for Christmas and saw it being made but I have hidden the completed piece so she cant see it. I have got to finish a turtle and a butterfly for the elder and younger daughters yet - - - Oh the pressure! |
