Re: Difference between the Foredoms Paul welcome to the list from another Paul.
I will get the ball rolling on your post by saying it is hard to go wrong by selecting one of the Foredom pieces. That being said, I have very limited experience with their variety. I have tried several of the "newer" machines over the years and have vowed that I will get one of the reversible models (although I seldom reverse a rotary tool) if mine ever dies.
I bought an "S" model in 1980. I have replaced the shaft once. It has not required repairs and I must admit that I do not do preventive cleaning and maintainance to the recommended standard. It has offered the torque required with my carving (usually life-size birds) in woods ranging from basswood to oak.
I do believe that "you get what you pay for" is a good rule to follow, as long as you are dealing with a quality supplier from the start. You also need to look at your preferred carving style. How do you intend to use the Foredom? Do you want to go flex-shaft? Most of us that started with flex-shaft (got to admit the micro's were not even on the horizon back then) will tell you that we use them mainly for roughing out, for hogging, but seldom for fine details.
Can't really help you on the plus' and minus' of the various TX models. I looked at the catalog and even though the "TX" models incorporate "new wonderfully improved" technology, I would be concerned that the handpieces have to be compatible. I have several of the "older" type and would not want to throw them away. But, since you are starting fresh, you may want to go for the TX over the others. |
