Default Carved bowl

I've been turning some bowls lately, from some Chinese elm (possibly Siberian elm, not sure) that my neighbor cut down (live tree) May 15th. I split the log sections in half with my chainsaw (the long way) cut circles out on the bandsaw, rough turned 10 bowls leaving around an inch of material. Soaked them in denatured alcohol for 24 hours, wrapped with masking paper, cut an opening in the paper on the dished side and left them upside down to dry for about 1 month. I decided to try to carve one of them.

I turned the bowl inside and out and left a 2" wide band on the outside about 1/8" thicker then the rest of the bowl, mini router to lower. Interesting to say the least on a curved surface.

Took me about 12 hours to carve and sand this. I don't think I'll ever do it again but it was something I wanted to try.

What do you think of it?
Thanks ~Mike

I think you would be selling yourself short if you didn't make any more of those carved bowls. It's simply beautiful. Very nice work.

Probably less actually, I just didn't have time to work on them before that. The largest bowl was only about 9" in diameter, 7" tall and about 1" thick after the rough turning. I was pretty impressed by the process (a guy in another forum told me about this process).

Thanks ~Mike
