I have Allen's dvd on wood spirit walking stick, and I agree it is great. It helped me the most in carving the wood spirit whether in a cane or stick or in the round. Use his method all the time. I like Wood Spirits!... it is worth the investment.

Guys !
I use "power" on the first DVD we ever made, "Carving a Wood Spirit in a Hiking Stick" (it has the dark red, front & back cover) but it is a reciprocating handpiece made by WeCheer that fits on a Foredom (some fit a Dremel only). I use Flexcut RG style gouges with this hand piece.
This tool is not a rotary tool like a micro-motor or Dremel.Of course, being a tool freak...I own a Foredom brand micro motor also as well as the heavier duty Foredom, but the rotary bits gets clogged in wet wood,as I carve my sticks green then apply Pentacryl & let them dry a cpl of weeks before exposing them to tourist and sunlight,so they don't split or check.

Frank Russell has a great book using power or "'rotary" tools only,I cant remember if it has a wood spirit,I think he does an old mans face in the round,in which you could apply the techniques to carve your spirit face cane.

Amazon.com: Carving Realistic Faces With Power (Schiffer Book for Carvers) (9780887404863): Frank C. Russell: Books

Gene Webb also has some short vids up on YouTube using power carving exclusively as well as sells his own videos,in the link you will find he has a DVD of carving wood spirits w/ power.

Hopes this helps,
