Hello. I may occasionaly need a dust collector system (like the Razaire) for sanding and power carving. I have a Jet Filtration System AFS-5OO like this one : Jet AFS-500 Air Filtration System : Buy Jet AFS-500 Air Filtration System at Axminster Power Tool Centre It's note made for power carving, but for cleaning the the air of little shop. But the system is the same than the the Razaire : a box, a fan, two filters. Can i make make a plexiglass device for the Jet 500, like the one on the avalaible for the Razaire, and use it like a dust collector ? The CFM is 400 maximum. Is it enough ? Thanks for answering. Dany. |

Being as how I'm the curious type, I'd go ahead and make it, just to see if it works. I'd say that if it isn't exactly what you have in mind, you may need to use a highter CFM unit. A number of years ago I made my own power carving set up. Right off hand I can't say what size CFM unit I have. Mine is inclosed in plexiglass. It worked out beautifully. I've used it a lot over the last nine or so years. |

I have the Jet AFS-1000 sitting on top of a refrigerator in my workshop area. This filters the fine dust out of the air. I also use my shop-vac set up with the hose nozzle on the workbench close to where I'm carving as the primary dust collector. I also wear a decent filter mask and goggles to keep the fine dust out of my eyes/nose/lungs. I wouldn't use the Jet filter as the primary, mainly because it's too bulky to get near my small workbench, and the filters are expensive. Claude |

Thanks for your reply. Claude, i may use my AFS like you do, normally, as an air cleaner, without plexiglass.... Or not... Like said Dull Knife, i have to make some experiments. I'll give some news later... Nevertheless Claude, it is possible to clean the filters of the AFS. Not with an air compressor, it's too violent. You have to slightly knock the filter in a trash bag, outside, then you'll soap it a few hours in water with dishes soap... Then you make it dry slowly... And it'll be ready for a new dust cycle... And yes, this filters are very expensive... Dany. |

I've used the brush attachment on my shop vac to carefully clean the filter, but can't use water as the frame of the filter is cardboard... A plexiglas frame in front of it would like work well to collect all dust, but would require frequent cleaning. As long as you don't mind that, I think it'd do the job quite nicely. A thought: purchase a "reusable" furnace filter of the right size to install in front of the Jet filter - make the cleaning routine a bit less onerous... Claude |

Claude. Thanks for the furnace filter idea - it's excellent. I have to find one... Concerning the frame of the filter, it will'nt be destroyed in water. It is part of the structure, and it is structured by the filter. So, it will keep its shape (i mean enough shape) while drying. If you have to throw away a dead full filter in future, have a try... Use the throw away kind of filters. You never really get all the dirt out of the reusable ones. |
