Any thoughts or tips on using an air hammer with modified chisels for roughing out logs? I know Elwood Troll uses modified chisels--drills a hole in the handle of a full size mallet tool, cuts off the working end of the chisel, epoxies the remander of the shaft into the handle, and inserts the shank end in an air hammer like typical air chisel. I'm curious as to what PSI to set the regulator on a compressor, and as I said any other comments or experiences in using an air hammer in wood carving. Thanks Bob L |

I modified some air chisels re forged and ground the cutting edge for wood. I thought I would like it for fast roughing on large carvings. For me it was not as fast as I thought it would be not as fast as a chainsaw. I still use it when I want to remove the bark from logs I want to store.

Thanks Don. Can you tell me what pressure you set your regulator at--90 PSI? I'm curious to find out if modifying a full size chisel or gouge like what ElWoodTroll (see link) would work for me in carving logs. http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/f67/air-tools-14546/#post128303 Bob L |

Thanks Jack. Any recommendations on a compressor? I don't have one and figured I'd get a cheappy just suitable enough to use the chisel with and blow off chips/sawdust. Bob L |

Thanks Don. That helps. So, now I know I need a compressor set at about 80 PSI using 4 CFM. Bob L |
