Default advice request re dust extraction.

Ok, I dont generate a lot of dust, its all small fine work in blackwood generally. But I will be working in the house. It seems my choices are ;

DRAPER 45L 1200W 230V DUST EXTRACTOR 40130 on eBay (end time 26-Jun-09 18:01:45 BST)

MAKITA 440 WET & DRY VACUUM DUST EXTRACTOR 240v on eBay (end time 24-Jun-09 20:15:19 BST)

or should I be looking elsewhere?
Cheers, Id really appreciate any help here. thanks a lot.

The Draper states it will filter down to .5 microns. The Makita does not supply this information making me think it does not filter very well. Be aware the these specs are not very accurate as they are formulated to give the best results which may not be to your advantage. Manufacturers tweak with the filter data so they come out with the lowest result. Often, this is done by clogging the filter with dust, so much so that there is little suction left for collection. As I have a wood working shop with a 5 hp dust collector, I spent a good deal of time researching dust collection. Best still is to wear a good 3M mask. Even with my cyclone, I still wear a NIOSH/OSHA approved full face dust mask. Perhaps, in the UK testing data is subject to more stringent requirements.

Here are 2 masks, both of which I use. The half mask is good for a dusty environment. I use this when cleaning up my shop which gets very dusty. The full face is what I use when turning because sometimes wood flies off the lathe and hits me in the face. The mask will protect my head and face from injury.

3M 6000 Series Full Face Respirators (6700, 6800, 6900)
Amazon.com: 3M 6000 Series Half Mask Respirator - Medium: Home Improvement

I usually buy the filters in bulk to save money and always have replacements.
Amazon.com: 3M Particulate Filter 2096, P100, with nuisance level acid gas relief (2 per Box): Home Improvement

With both of these masks, you can purchases vapor filters for use when spraying varnishes, ureathanes or other harmful products. In fact, they will take any of the filters made by 3M.
