i would bet that a large number of carvers are cariacture carvers-- so the magaizines lean in that direction- i have seen several from europe and there wa snt a cariacture carving in them-- i like to do realistic horses-- but i havent seen one article on them-- and dont expect to. i happy taking lessons from a good instructor. yeah it costs a bit-- but what are u doing this for anyway-- im doing it basically for myself--so i spend my money as i fit. that isnt meant to judge someone else--only my take on things-- important that you keep carving and for yourself, improving, what ever that means to you. i know a guy who carves nothing but owls-- all sizes-- that would be boring to me-- but he loves it. go figure.

Sorry for the confusion - GMC handles our sister magazine, Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts, but as noted, they have their own Woodcarving Magazine.

What' are your thoughts on a digital issue for foreign subscribers? Not that I can make that happen anytime soon - but I'd be interested to hear what you guys think - whether foreign or domestic. Would you like a digital version - instead of the printed version or in addition to the printed version? Do you have any digital subscriptions now?

Hey Shannon -

I have two free digital subscriptions to ProSound News and EQ magazine. They are basically delivered via email link to access the latest issue, and you have the option to save it locally. They are basically like a PDF of the actual physical magazine with some additional navigation options.

I have mixed reactions. In some ways I miss the physical product - can read it without my laptop - easier to read less hassle. In other ways I like that can keep em all and they take up no physical storage space. But I wasn't willing to pay the high subscription rate as opposed to the free digital only versions.

For carving magazines - I would be willing to subscribe and might even be happy with a digital only version - due to storage, even here in the US. Might even want both. It's nice to have the physical mag to take with you to a park when you want to sit & carve a project without lugging a laptop. (Of course, in that case you'd print the article I suppose.)

But even better - I would definitely LOVE to see a digital product that took the magazine into new areas. Animated content, video content, audio interviews, show highlights, expanded content etc. Of course, the cost of producing all that content may be prohibitive if folks weren't willing to pay for it. And with authors creating and selling their own instructional DVDs or online streaming content, you may have harder time finding authors willing to do video work for the magazine.

It would be REALLY cool to have a digital magazine with illustrations that let you zoom in & out and rotate the carving 360 deg like the sample done here awhile back. Things like that.

That's my stream of conciousness off the cuff response.

I would find it invaluable to have a digital edition. The cost of shipping and the time makes overseas subs a painful process. I would rather have a paper edition but if the choice was there I'd buy the digital no question!
