Default WCI Holiday 2009 (Issue #49)

Lots of folks have received their holiday issue, so here I am again, asking for your feedback.

I know, I know - No Holes.... We asked you for your feedback and 2 out of 3 readers said they didn't use the holes... Bob worked out a way to drill clean holes and we hope his article helps those of you who do prefer the holes.

I saw some feedback on another thread that there are too many Santas.... This is a hard one - some folks subscribe JUST to get the holiday issue with tons of Santas... Others don't carve Santa at all... We did try to include lots of articles not centered on Santa - as well as enough Santa projects to keep folks happy - it's hard to determine what the right mix is.... This is something we asked readers about back in the spring 2009 issue... We'll keep trying!

Please let us know what you liked and what you didn't like in this issue - be as specific as you can... we have thick skin and can take the feedback... out intention is to continually improve the magazine based on what our readers want - but we need to hear from you to do that!

I think you are doing a fine job on the mix. It's a very good balance. It is impossible to make everyone happy all the time. I will reply with constructive feedback when I have read the entire magazine. So far so good.
Thanks
Lundy

shannon-- you know you will never make everyone happy-- unfortunately. every issue has something that i like-- most have several things- but i seldom follow thru and use each idea. more often it spurs another idea and i go there. i personally enjoy the santas-- tho i do wish the issue came out a bit earlier-- so that i hadnt already started or completed the ones for this year- and by next year im often on to something else--

keep up the good work.

Hi Shannon

Even with the Santas (which I really don't think it was exactly a 100 Santas carving book), I enjoyed the magazine issue as always.

I was pleased with the Whittling Santa Pencils as I have just whittled a Woodspirit in a pencil for the first time. I don't know--it looks more like just another Woodspirit to me!

Wood Spirits! 3d! Imax!

I got a kick out of Chris Pye's Christmas Stocking--and no Santa too! LOL I was surprised--I never thought of him doing something cute and fun like that. It was nice to see him do something fun--but then again, he has done a headboard with a mouse too!

Chris Pye: Mouse & Flowers Bedhead
Chris Pye: Woodcarving

Watch out Chris--cat's out of the bag!!!

Baby rattles?!?!?! Wow-that's different! Something I might think about doing since my fiance's oldest daughter lost hers many moons ago--and don't tell anybody but her daughter's facing the big 30 soon! So, it could be a fun birthday present and a nostalgic Christmas ornament too!

Spoons, stars, lapboards, animals, train, lighthouse, trees, clothespins (Cool! Nice going Forrest!), reindeer.....yep, quite a bit of diversity!

Keep up the good work--maybe Santa will help you find a quick and cheap way to punch dem holes!

BTW--BobD--did you try drilling a stack of magazines with a board on top and on bottom using a bradpoint drill? You can still use the jig, just be sure to drill through a piece of scrap wood on top and bottom of the magazines. The paper shouldn't rip if the magazines are clamped tight with the boards. From time to time, I have to drill thick stacks of prints of drawings (real cheap bond paper) for binding with post screws, and that's how I do it.

Have a great Holiday Season!

Bob L

Hi Bob,
I tried with a brad point, a spade bit (one of those ones with a spur on the sides), a Forstner bit, and a regular twist bit. None worked as quick and cleanly as the pipe.

Shannon,

I subscribe to several magazines, that are somewhat topic specific. Never have I liked every article in them. I don't expect to try to carve every item that WCI features. And I'll even fess up to not reading each and every article. But I do notice every article, and every advertisement. I even read most of the advertisements. And I always read a majority of the articles, and even reread some more than a few times. Some articles are way above my skills and interest level, and some below too. All of this makes WCI the magazine it really is. WCI is a woodcarving magazine that strives to appeal to all carvers and burners, and I for one thinks that it does. There is always something for everyone.

Let me elaborate a bit, Bob...Unless I was VERY, Very, VERY Careful, It would tear out on me. I wanted to provide a way that you'd have to work hard to make fail <GRIN>

Every commercial/industrial device for making round holes in a stack of paper, that I have seen, uses a paper drill like the one Bob D featured in WCI.
