Shannon
This is my absolute favorite issue ever. Great job to all the folks that put it together.

Great to see Mark win Santa Carver of the year. Also liked the article about Ron, His carvings are amazing.

Mark Garac's ornament article and so was Sean's Santa carving articles were great.

Its gonna be hard to top this, what a great finish for 2007

Shannon, everyone has said it all. I repeat, best issue since I've been reading WCI almost two years. Fun, being able to read articles by folks I chat with on the boards. I have almost read every page and I'm in the process of completing Mark Gargac's santa. I think your idea of a beginner santa is wonderful even for non-beginner I want to do one too! YES, I plan to watch and tape the Sissy Spacek movie. I think it's going to be well worth the time spent. I know I'm forgetting things I want to say, but know that you have a wonderful magazine and have helped me greatly further my carving skills.
Thanks WCI,
Kathy

Yes, I did look at all 190 Santas from the contest.

I think the beginner project is terrific. The magazine needs to appeal to all levels. I really like the critique. I like that this is done gently by telling all the good things as well as the bad.

Can't wait to try all the Santas.

Yes, Hi Ho, Shannon took the time to post all of them. Click on the Santa Contest sign on the right of this page. Don't forget that each page has multiple pages inside it.....or you will miss some of them.

I can see how Hi Ho missed them. I didn't know there was more till the
second time around either. That's our male nature not to see what's right in fun of us

Haven't received my issue yet. The secret to finding the fox is to have a non-carver look for it. I end up rereading the article checking out the pictures even some of the advertisements have drool marks on them.
Shannon you asked if you should keep up the judges critique and in my opinion you should. I would never send one in but when I first look at a carving I think it is great and then find it interesting to see the critique.
My magazine is not through subscription they seem to get damaged to often in the mail or perhaps they take them home and read it first but I have better luck from the newsstand. hence the delay

Well today I got to see what all the fuss was about. The post office finally finished with my copy and forwarded it on to me. I see Shannon, your message was posted on the 14th, and today's the 20th, so I guess that's pretty good?

The issue is great! Very timely too, as I could use the help with Mark's Santas, and there the help appears! My version isn't quite the same, but you can tell it's a guy with a beard and has a red hat! LOL So we'll call him Santa.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie with Sissy S., it sounds really interesting. Must remember to watch for it.

The pierced ornament by Barry MacKenzie is a real eye catcher, and opens up a whole realm of possibilities of different woods sandwiched together. Great idea.

Kathleen Schuck's piece with the starter Santa is perfect to get folks going. A simple but well designed and elegant ornament, is just the thing to get a new carver started with their new tools, and pretty well guarantees a successful first project, which is very important to the beginner.

Shawn Cipa's Santa and Rick Jenson's Santa give the new carver next steps or intermediate carvers more varieties to go for. The Floral Sled by Charley Phillips gives a nice alternative to Santa's and I'm sure will be well appreciated by carvers doing the Christmas theme.

My hat goes off to Bart Wilson for his Santa Off the Clock critique. A really nice piece and Shawn did a great job of critiquing it. My respect for Ron Davidson just keeps going up. Reading his article gives me a whole new view or appreciation of carving and how passionately a person will pursue it. It also demonstrates the lengths that fellow carvers will go to help a fellow achieve his goal of continuing his passion.

All in all, a great issue Shannon. Please pass on my congratulations, thanks and appreciation to the whole team there at Fox Chapel, they turned out a real corker! I really noticed the size of the photographs in this issue, they make reading the issue a very pleasant experience and reduces eye strain.

Bob
