Unhappy WCI Archive CD

I just received my Wood Carving Illustrated Archive CD, issues 1-25.

Considering the high quality of your magazine and books, I am disappointed at the quality of the pdf's on the CD. Whoever did the scanning overexposed the files and washed out the rich color that is a trademark of WCI. Even the black print is not black. And...no, it's not my monitor because it is color calibrated every 30 days for professional photography use.

The articles are excellent as expected. And the magazine is "top-shelf". But if you decide to re-scan those pages, please let me know as I would like my CD replaced.

Thanks for the info Mike. I think I will pass on it for now.

I agree with Mike. Lots of great information but the colors do look "washed out".

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I wanted to talk to folks here at the office about the product before getting back to you, so my apologies for the delayed response.

Here's the scoop...With the CD of the first 25 issues, we were working with pre-digital material; basically we had to scan in the material. It's not an ideal situation, but our art department did the best it could with the material on hand.

I appreciate the fact that you guys think so highly of our standards for Woodcarving Illustrated and Fox Chapel Publishing. I'm sorry you feel the CD didn't meet those standards -- but we will work to improve on this material for future products.

Best Regards,

That sounds reasonable. I've run across the same problem myself in trying to scan projects to take with me to the mountains so that I woulodn't have to take the entire magazine. None ever look as good as the original.

I was just wondering ... is the entire content of each issue scanned or is it just certain articles, patterns etc.

Its the full content of the magazine (ads and all). Basically, we scanned in the entire magazines.

Remember that movie with Michael Keaton? - Multiplicity or something like that.... when you make a copy of a copy - it's never as good as the original.

Unfortunately, those early issues are all on film (not digital) and nobody prints from film anymore. Our production department is researching ways to get higher quality scans from printed material - but we're just not there yet.

The good news is that the later issues are all digitally archived and should reproduce in all their glory.

Bob & Shannon,

I am pleased with the quality of CD and think it is worth what it cost. I would have liked a complete article index at the beginning rather than having to go to each issue index. Thanks for the effort.

The quality may suffer but a lot of those issues are out of print and it is the CD or nothing. I have all of the issues, now in storage. I find it convenient enough that the quality is acceptable.
Thanks for doing that. I am ready for the next CD.
