IMHO the whirlygig belongs in a craft magazine rather than woodcarving. The wolf at least is carved and the idea is show finishing detail. It's hard to please everyone as our interests differ. Looking forward to receiving the mag regardless of cover. Ed

as a subscriber and a relatively new carver the folk art cover appeals to me

Heck yeah I subscribe, and I think you need one more choice in the poll, "Neither One". I am with so many others, you need a cover that conveys Wood Carving. Bob |

I too agree with most here that there neither picture really promotes woodcarving. Is it really too late to pick a different picture? If not, why not show a picture of a carving in process like a lot of past issues. I understand you may be just trying something different which may work or may not. I am a subscriber so the cover picture really does not matter to me, but to catch the eye of a non-subscriber I really think it should show someone carving something that someone could think that, "Hey, I could do that. Maybe I should buy this magazine and give it a shot". Chipper67

I would go for the 'Wolf' cover, because it looks like it relates more to carving. The Whirligig Cover looks more for say your Scrollsaw Magazine. Your right Shannon, I say if it is a Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine cover I'd still want it whether the cover was 'Wolf' or Whirligig. lol Kathy

Thanks for the comments guys (and gals - here in PA Dutch country "guys" is acceptable to use for a mixed group) - very helpful! Keep them coming! We did try a carving process shot with the whirligig - but without his paddle arms in place - it looked very weird. One thing we have found is that if the carving looks too difficult - it's a turn-off. Like someone mentioned earlier - it's got to have that - "Hey I could do that!" hook to it. It would be helpful if you guys could tell me some of the covers from past issues that appealed to you. (you can view past covers with the link on the left - at the top under "subscribe today" header - order back issues.) I'd be curious to compare your top pics with how that issue did on newsstands. Well I'm new to the area and I just received my first issue yesterday, I have only practiced a few things so far and not started a project yet. So as a newbie to the craft I picked the Wolf cover, the Whirligig looks to me like it would be more of an Arts and Crafts type magazine at first glance. Not until you read the cover would you see that it is carving magazine. I think you would have to have a picture on the cover that would grab someones attention and to display what the contents of the magazine is, before reading what is in the magazine. It's not that I feel that the Whirligig is easier or less of a carving but it appears to be more of a Arts and Crafts project at first glance. I think the past covers with the money shot photo plus in the works shots or pictures of other items in the magazine are the best as long as they are not too busy.
