In August of this year while shopping I saw the magazine "Whittling" this issued featured the 5 minute wizard, Classic Ball-in-Cage, and a number of other projects. I have never done this type of wood working before but it intrigued me. The idea of using a knife and taking a piece of wood and turning it into something was amazing. So using the advice in the magazine I went out and purchased a small knife. I ended up with the Sargent from Woodcraft. I went on the cheaper side just in case the idea of carving was better than the actual carving. I started with a piece of 1.75 X 1.75 X 10 piece of basswood. Give me a little room for error. From the first moment I started to cut into the wood I could tell I liked it. After each milestone of carving the wood it excited me to see what would happen next. Slowly the wood transformed from a block of wood into a chain. I do not know if the chain is a appropriate beginners project but I feel that I learned a lot but I can tell I have a lot to learn. Thank you for introducing me to this hobby hopefully I can learn enough and then in a few years when my son and daughter are old enough share the enjoyment with them. Thank you again. I have attached a few pictures. Although I am sure it is a little rough I am rather proud of the turn out. |

That's quite a nice looking chain you have carved there...especially for a first project! I've carved a number of chains in my day and I can tell you they are a bit of a challenge. I'm glad you have been bitten by the wood carving bug and to have you on this forum! Don't be afraid to ask questions here. You can get an awful lot of expert advice here if you just ask. I'm anxious to see your next project!

That's a fine example of true whittlin. Just you, a piece of wood, and a knife. The results - a great looking section of chain. While I like to be called a whittler, I have never had the patience nor the talent to complete a chain....not even two links. Well done......Lets do a wizard now! Tom H |
