Default Smilies

Hi Gang,
We've had some complaints about the way the forum automatically converts text into smilies, such as if I write "c o w b o y" without the spaces it converts to .

Claudio thinks he can change the default so that you have to enable this function rather than the current default which requires you to disable it. So...the question is...should the smilies be automatic, or do you want to choose when they work.

The problem is that you can't choose to allow and disallow in one post. If you don't want a smilie to appear in one sentence, but you do want it to appear in the other, your out of luck.

Please vote and let me know what you think. If you don't care, feel free to not vote or to vote for the one that usually matches your preference (I'm not giving you a "I don't care option.").

Bob

Bob:
I noticed that most of the smilies in the pop up when you click the bock to the right of where I'm typing have a colon ( : ) in the front and back of them. With this definition of a smilie, one is far less likely to get accidental smilies.

Here's an example. In the pop up, it's spelled : c o w b o y : (but without the spaces). When I type the word:
cowboy
I don't see a smilie come up any more.

Claude

Wink Re: Smilies

I like smilies and wish there was more icons that expressed more emotions. But I don't think they should be automatic.I wish there were ones like shaking a head in bewilderment, things like that!

Personally I don't know why you would want to convert tests to smilies.
Now converting text to smilies would make more sense .
I sure hope i didn't mispell anything.

Ok, I was a mite confused by that. I don't have a problem converting punctuation marks to smilies. Text? I dunno. That usually requires before and/or after punctuation as well doesn't it? I would like to see more smiley options though. A good range of emoticons helps people communicate better in a medium where you can't see facial expressions or read body language, imo. Many of the emoticons you have here are pretty useless (sorry).

Exclamation Re: Smilies

Since my recent post seems to at least be a contributing factor to this thread. I think I should do more than just vote.

I have no objection to smilies and believe, as Nomad stated, that they can contribute important understanding to the written word. My problem, and the reason for my post, mentioned above, is that I did not want used in place of P o s t in P o s t Office. I had checked the No Icon below and could not stop the smilie from being put in there. I am still not sure about this as I went to those on the side and saw no option to turn them off.

I think that the option requiring a deliberate action to put the smilies in is better than having to go whereever works to turn them off or having to put unncessary spaces in a word to elimintate the icon.

Here's the spot to click to remove the smilies.

Sorry that I missed that Bob, did not think about looking other than at the icon section. It would have avoided having to go through all of this.

No problem Paul! It seems like the majority of people agree with you (so far). I never really thought about it myself, so for me...it's totally majority rules when it comes to this.
