Is there a specific reason for the 580 pixel height restriction on image attachments. This really limits the detail that can be viewed on some of the more intricate posts. Most monitors today are set to display 1024x768 or higher. A simple file size limit (which is already imposed) would make more sense. Thanks |

I didn't know there was a limit. Some of my photos have been 1600x1200 right out of my blackberry.

I'm not talking about galleries. I'm talking about initial posts with picture attachments. If you look at the requirements under "manage attachments", the posted limit is 780 pixels wide x 580 pixels high, and attached photos all seem to be resized to those limits.

I don't have a gallery. I'm talking about the pics I attach to my posts. The photos I uploaded of my Schrade Whittler are 1600x1200 and 1024x468 respectively.

Duh! My mistake. I see what you mean, the photos are resized by the forum software after upload.

Ed, Go to one of your posts, click on the attached photo to open it. When it opens, right click and select properties. What size is the picture? |

That's why we offer the gallery and the attachment feature. Unfortunately, not everyone has high-speed internet, and the smaller attachments are really for them. Bob |

It's not the physical dimensions of the picture, but the file size that takes up bandwidth. JPEG compression allows you to post fairly large pictures at a relatively small size. As an example, I have a picture 1333 x 2000 pixels saved as a .jpg with moderate compression and the file size is 205kb. The same file, reduced to 387 x 580 pixels and saved as a .bmp results in a file size of 660kb. All I'm saying is that it's the size of the file and not the physical dimensions that should be restricted. btw: many boards and company run forums forbid or severly discourage the posting of .bmp files for that very reason. |

Good point. When we update the website and message board in the near future, I'll see what we can do. Bob |

Bob, I meant to add that if the dimensions were limited to 580 x 780 ie: 780 wide x 580 high OR 580 wide x 780 high, that would be a vast improvement. Thanks |
