Default Sharpening Poll

Hi everyone,
We're launching a new column in the magazine called "Woodchips." Basically, it's going to be a collection of tips and little factoids about a specific topic. For the inagural column, we're focusing on sharpening.

In each issue, I'm going to post a poll about the topic featured in the Woodchips. Please choose your most-used sharpening method. If your method isn't listed, please note what you use here in the thread.

Bob

BobD, I will be very interested in your comments. I checked "Others" on your list of methods because I use all of the methods you list, at different times. For the most used method thou I would say I use Power. I would like to use just one method but it doesn't work out that way.

I'm looking for the PRIMARY method you use...if you could choose only one method for the rest of your life...what would you use!

I use ceramic stones for my knives. I suspect I'll use ceramic on my gouges too, once I get a set of shaped stones.

I agree, if you want it to be accurate it should be multible choice. Most of the carvers I know use power for chisels and such but stick to scary sharpe and leather hones for knives. Just my opinion.

Not a lot of time to sharpen anymore so there is only one way ....speed power.

But I stll strop by hand even after buffing the edge.

Never could get that shapening down. One method for me and one only. He lives in Seattle Washington and his name is Rick Ferry (Little Shavers). Although I can hone my knifes and chisels and put hte edge back on them. When they get to where I have honed them too much and the angle is all wrong I pack them up and send them to Rick. I know I have to do without them for a few weeks but it is all worth it when I get them back

Upon further review...I've adjusted the choices a bit. If you'd like to change your vote, PM me.

Rough sharpening with diamond stones, or 1" belt sander, finish with buffing wheel or strops.
