Thumbs up Re: Question- Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine Format

Personally, I vote for articles that get right to the point with less how-to pictures if it means more "overall" variety in articles.. you know, sort-of like the magazine is right now.

The subscribers area sounds like a super idea for additional article information, then you could cut down the how-to pictures to a very bare minimum in the print copy and add even more articles! Oh, yeah!! A reasonable balance would have to be found so that those without the internet could still have enough information.

I love the bios which I always go to first when an article appeals to me. Getting a "feel" for the author's background greatly enhances the reading of an article for me! That's why all major book publishers include an authors bio on the inside jacket because people want that information right up front. Keep 'em!

Can't agree with the "less pictures" theory.....a picture is worth a "thousand" words!

You don't have to be envious Bob.....give us all your phone number and we will take turns calling you every 15 minutes at night...that way you won't waste time sleeping!

On the issue of more or less photos in "how to" articles, maybe I can add a little something. About 25 years ago one of my responsibilities was producing a rescue training manual. The manual was to be used by local fire departments in the training of fire fighters in the techniques of rescue. This included everything from burning buildings, extrication from wrecked vehicles, farm silos, cave ins and water. Several of the chapters ended up being a little experiment, where the text/words were almost nonexistent. In other words we let the photos tell the whole story, and used words only where absolutely necessary. The only down side back then was the added cost. The trainees that were contacted all liked the large number of photos, and had less trouble visualizing and practicing the techniques. There is, however a good balance between text and illustration. Too much of either can be a distraction for the reader/learner. One of the most difficult types of writing is where you are trying to tell the reader how to do something. Especially when you have readers at all levels of ability. It still takes an editor to strike that good balance between illustration and text. I think WCI does a good job at that on most articles...Tom H

When I suggested a subscriber's thread to view photo's that weren't used in the magazine I wasn't inferring that the amount of photographs in the magazine should be comprimised. When I take off on one of my sabbaticals one of the greatest things about leaving is being free of the computer. And when I do take off and plan a project or two that was wrtten up in WCI I've been know to haul those issues along with me for reference! The same goes when I'm working on a project in town. Many days I take that issue with me to the club carving session. Why???? Because my computer's USB and power cables aren't long enough! Ha! Ha!
