Default question about contest rules

Hey there,
I've been thinking quite a bit about what to do with a large hunk of basswood I have. I was thinking about doing a carving of a civil war drummer boy. I'd like to base it on photos of Johnny Klem, the Drummer Boy of Shiloh. The pose will change but the uniform and face should be, with a bit of luck, his.
So the question is, if I make a carving of a historical person, based on a phoro from the 1860s, is it considered origional and eligible for competition? I'd like to know before I expend a huge amount of effort on this project.

Thank you,
Dan

Hi Dan,

That should be fine. The photo and person are both well past copyright protection.

Thanks!
Mindy
