| | Re: leg lamp I'm sorry you feel that way, Highroller. But I have to be honest; you expressed your opinion, and others expressed theirs...
And as for chastising...I think I missed something.
I really encourage you to take Mitch's advice and let Shannon and I know what sorts of articles you like! We spend a lot of time talking to people and searching the Web trying to find new and interesting contributors and projects...we want to hear your feedback!

| | Re: leg lamp Sorry you feel that way. I don't see where anyone chastized you - just that they had a different opinion on the subject you posted.
That we have a way to discuss these differences is exactly what makes the board interesting. It seems that you took offense to that difference of opinion instead of taking the opportunity to give support for your opinion. You even stated that you did not expect everyone to agree with you, but seem surprised (or disappointed) when they didn't.
There is no "winning" and it's actually our loss if you do indeed decide to leave. As I stated, it's these differences that make life interesting. You have the opportunity to state your dislikes (which you did). I (and Bob) asked for more information about what you LIKE about the magazine. It wasn't done in an effort to make little of your opinion, but in an effort to help you and others discuss differences of likes and dislikes. |

| | Re: leg lamp Hey, Highroller, if you are still here ( I hope) don't be put off by any other opinions...they are just that opnions, and a suggestion that you might propose some type of article sure didn't seem to me to be an affornt to you origianal post, just a suggestion.\\
Just as a matter of fact, I thought the leg lamp was a little tacky too, but I won't carve it....simple solution....it was quite humerous, but the line between humor and tacky is pretty thin and sometimes quite subjective.
There have been a LOT of discussions here with varying opinions and some (a few) heated arguments, but somehow we all seem to maintain a sence of friendship, and I'm sure that no one here took you comments as an affont to their "status" on the board.
I sure hope you reconsider leaving the site...a lot of good info is traded here!

| | Re: leg lamp I have got this magazine from day one and can say I don't carve a majority of the projects that are published. But I read everyone and find many helpful hints in each issue.
I may attempt that leg lamp sometime because I have watched that movie every Christmas for the past 15 or so years. And I still laugh every time it's on.
Highroller welcome aboard, you will find that on this board , or any other discussion board on the Internet that everyone has an opinion. This is a good group of people with a wealth of knowledge. So be sure to stick around and join in on these discussions. Everyone will respect your opinion, but might not always agree with it and that's OK.

| | Re: leg lamp I also have been watching A Christmas Story, for a number of years and I usually watch it several times when it is on.
I happen to like the leg lamp. And what it represents to Ralph's Dad. I may not carve it any time soon, but I enjoyed the article just the same.
I hope that you continue to visit this board.

| | Re: leg lamp I'm not usually home to watch morning tv, but I'm enjoying the last days of our Christmas break. I watched the TODAY show this morning and Meredith gave Matt Lauer a LEG LAMP for his birthday today!! Just like our leg lamp--with a pretty classy lampshade!
Tacky? Probably. Funny? Yeh, that too.
WCI needs to have a variety of carving topics covered in the magazine--I don't always have the urge to carve everything that appears in each issue, but I can enjoy them. Different strokes for different folks....

| | Re: leg lamp Well I have to admit that I found the leg lamp a bit tacky myself. I was basically asked to commission the article - personal feelings aside. So I did - and you know what - it's actually a good little article. Even if you never plan on carving a leg lamp - Mike's tips for carving the chanel for the lamp cord and cleaning it out of glue squeeze out makes the article worthwhile in my opinion. I will say that I threatend to quit my job if they put the lamp on the cover. LOL.
And you are all right - different strokes for different folks - and everyone is entitled to their own opinion - even if it is wrong -er uh - different than mine. |

| | Re: leg lamp As I always do, I watched The Christmas Story again this year paying particular attention the the lamp. I believe I'm correct in observing that the lamp did not stop exactly at the top end of the leg but continued on a ways to include a portion of the buttock. Am I the only one who saw this, or am I the only one who would look for such details? Please help me out here or such observations on my part will continue to confirm my wife's view that I'm becoming a a dirty old man.
With this article generating such interest I was thinking that maybe next year you could run another article on doing the other leg and then continue to add a section each coming year until the entire figure is completed. What a project that would be!! There is another thread about the difficulty of carving the female form up and running at the moment so maybe this is a way to help us all out. |
