I sure would love to have a book on how to carve a cane by Hershel ..Or better yet .. have an article by him on carving a more simplified version of his canes.. Do you think he would consent? Charlotte

I am Hershal's daughter. Thanks for all the nice comments about his cane. I thought I would try to answer some of your questions.

1. He usually plans about 2 years before he makes a cane.
2. He makes his own patterns.
3. He uses any type of tools necessary to do the job. He uses the bandsaw, knives, gouges, foredom, dremel, NSK, optima2, and wood burner.
4. He uses oil paints.
5. No he doesn't have a carving book out.
6. He celebrated his 86th birthday this year.

Indeed - thanks so much for the reply.

Perhaps WCI could assign a writer to work with him on an article if he isn't up for writing one himself? Or an interview with him. I'd especially LOVE to read more about his planning and design process in addition to actual crafting of the carving. These are truly outstanding pieces.

Cheers
ChuckT
