Re: Articles yes - it would basically be up to the author. If we turn an article down - the author is free to do whatever they want with it - sell it to another magazine, post it on the internet....
Once an article is submitted by an author, there is a lot of work that goes into it on our end - editing, proofreading, photo touch up, photography, layout, more editing, and proofreading... It's not as simple as taking a rejected an article and posting it.
And usually at the rejection stage - there is no article - just an idea and/or a photo of a completed project. The author does not actually write the article until it has been accepted for publication. (In a few cases - we do receive complete articles submitted for consideration - but I would say that is probably less than 10% of the article submissions)
And yes, our authors are compensated for their articles - Certainly nobody is going to get rich by having an article published - but for a lot of authors, it's not just the money - it's the recognition and of course sharing with the community - so I would think that some folks might be interested in posting their article if it didn't make it to print - but it's entirely up to them as individuals and not something we can do as a company - we have no claim or ownership of rejected articles...
