Default Whittle Pup tutorial

It took a lot longer than I thought it would, but I finished it. If you want a fun little carving, check this one out.

Carving the Whittle Pup

I plan to make a single-file version (a PDF that you can download), but that's going to be a few days.

Any feedback appreciated.

Happy whittling!

Great tutorial Jim, I have one of your whittle dogs, a whiskey (barrel) pup that you sent me in one of the exchanges and have been copying it. In fact in a wedding scene i posted a couple weeks ago one was included in the scene.

A few updates to the tutorial, and the PDF is now available. Go to Carving the Whittle Pup and you can download the PDF from there.

Thank you all for the nice comments. Making that tutorial was quite a challenge. I've carved over a hundred of those little dogs, but it's something entirely different figuring out how to explain it, step-by-step. I hope you find it useful and others can learn something from it. I've certainly learned a lot by following the tutorials that others have posted here.

Herb, that Whiskey Dog, if I recall, was quite a bit different from the Whittle Pup. I don't think I kept one after the carving exchange. Silly of me. I'd like to see what you've done with the design.

Anyway, I used the bandsaw to cut out a blank for the Whiskey Dog. Those were fun, but I liked the challenge of carving these from just a branch or a dowel. Definitely a different experience.

I'm currently working on a Whittle Cat, which will be the subject of a future tutorial.

Spectacular tutorial Jim! Your hard work and dedication really show! I've tried downloading the PDF but I just get another copy of the tutorial...there is nothing to save. Maybe I'm doing something wrong Any suggestions?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for taking the time to make the tutorial. I can see a lot of thought and time went into it.

I still have the Whittle Dog you carved for me and, yes, I still like him a lot. He feels so good to the touch.

I am looking forward to your "Whittle Cat" tutorial.
