I have been trying lately to carve a wooden whistle from a tree branch with no success. Does anyone have plans on how to make one?

You have to use a Willow branch if thats the type you're talking about. Here's a link to show you how to do it. http://schizoaffective.org/whistle/

Red maple twigs are my favorite for making slip bark whistles but I must wait until the sap is flowing in early spring or I just can't get the bark to slip. Inbetween then I just have to make them in the woodshop using the drill press and dowel rod plugs.

Hello! I would like to thank James A for bringing up this topic because through this, some concerned people were able to share some sites amd materials to be used. This would greatly help me since I am just a beginner. I do hope I can also post my work here. |

A few years ago I made some Santa Whistles from 1 inch round Basswood. You can also use a 1 X 1 piece as well. It can be as long as you want. I drilled a 1/2 inch hole( slightly off center if square wood is used) and about 1 inch long, trimmed the lower side slightly and installed a piece of wood that was flat on top. At about 1/4 inch past the plug, cut straight down and taper back to plug. You may have to tinker a bit to get the plug flattened enough to create an air passage. When it makes the sound you want, glue the plug in place and carve the whistle however you like. Basically the sound system is the same as the green willow, you just drill a hole and insert a plug. Sorry I don't have any pictures, the whistles went to my Grandchildren.
