Default starting some knives

I have decided to make myself a new set of kinves nothing wrong with the old set I just wanted some more, beatiful wood to look at while carving. I picked out and matched Bolivian rosewood for the inner scales and some of my private stock maple burl (My older brother brought me home the burl for an X-Mas present last year, found it while logging about 20 miles from here). I will start by drilling a hole through the scales and then carve a mortise for the blades.

Those are a couple really nice pieces of wood...should make a beautiful set of scales! That birdseye is one of my favorite woods. A bear to work with but well worth the extra care.

It's actually soft maple burl like carving through butter with only a few hard spots near the eyes. I don't think I would make any from birdseye maple that is a bit to hard.

Hi Carl, I'm looking forward to seeing your finished knives.

I've made a few of my own blades but no fancy handles.

Carl:
I think that wood will look great as a handle, but I'm more curious about the blade. Is it made from a power hacksaw blade or...?

hey Claude they are blade blanks purchased from Warren cutlery, I give them a triple differential temper, round the backs of the blades, re sharpen them, also round over the back of the bevel and polish them up. I posted some pics of finished knives under tools, I have sold quite a large number of them. I came up with my own style of handles and a while back seen in WCI an article on making laminated knives it's the same technique, I think it was issue 15. I recived the whole set of back issues as a present from my mom when I started carving.

Going to be nice Carl. I love to make boxes out of BR. It's getting so expensive though. Looking forward to seeing the knives finished.

Can you post a link to your knives, I couldn't find the post.

Corey

here are some pictures of finished knives I dip them in beeswax for the finish it makes them water proof and they do not get slippery if you have high humidity or sweaty hands.
