Mark,
Great job and thanks for the insight into your finishing technique!! Do you prepare the carving beforehand? such as cleaning or sanding?

Thanks again.

Excellent carving, tutorial and Paint Mark.
But I do have a question on one area. If you spray the lacquer immediately after applying the BLO, doesn't that pervent the BLO from drying. I have always heard to let the piece dry before applying lacquer.

Kenny, I like sealing the carving with satin lacquer or sometimes I like using a matte finish for sealing. Linseed oil is a dust magnet, so sealing with the lacquer ensures a clean carving, I feel it also helps maintain that rich soft overtone the linseed oil brings out in the acrylic washes while it is still in a damp state. I did'nt mention this in the tutorial, but I let the carving soak up the oil, by letting it sit in it for 3 to 5 min.
I do some sanding before applying any finish,I sand the hat with 220 grit sandpaper, then 320, and finish up with 400. The face I sand the same way but after using the 400, I also use 600 grit to where the face almost takes on a polished look, this seems to really create a nice soft, almost, skin like look, when I apply the other finishes. After all the sanding is compleated on the face, and the dust and grit is brushed off from the sandpaper, I will take a small V- tool and accent all the wrinkles and fine gouge cuts on the face.

Tony, Sorry, I thought Kenny had asked about sanding and preparing the carving. To answer your question check his post on this thread.
