By the way....everyone... This entire tutorial is available in book form from Fox Chapel Publishing. The book is called "Relief Carving Wood Spirits" and includes all of the how-to and several additional wood spirit patterns. | Hi , I have been trying to carve a femal wood spirite on a walking staff, but when I follow the steps for wood spirits in the wood spirit and greenman book I can't keep her from looking old and saggy. What steps should I change to get the result I want, "a femal face coming out of the wood and blending with the staff"? ![]() Peacewood (God grows it, Nature cuts it, and I carve it.) |

I'm REALLY new to carving... *blush* (I've done some chip carving, and tried my hand at some wood spirits/wizards from youtube vids.) I have a piece of basswood with the bark still around it that I got at a local wood store and was wondering.... Can this be done without cutting the main shape out with a scroll saw? I don't have access to one at this time and was wondering if this could just be carved out of the wood I have. This may be a super silly question, but like I said, I'm new and I'd rather not 'waste' a good piece of basswood trying something that shouldn't be tried. *blush* Thanks. ![]() Kim |
