Hey Paolo 59... I don't know if you are refering to my mask but if you are there are some surprises in store. The mask I started is in the drying stage as I started with green wood.... It is drying very well at this time and will be ready for the next stage very soon... No checking so far, cold to the touch which translates to it is still wet. When the wood is warm to the touch it is close to dry. and ready for the next stage of carving. Thanks for asking... H

Hi Howard, I'm referring to the tutorial "african mask low relief carving" from Irish. Anyway I'm curious about your mask too. I have not the time to check the forum regularly, so, many times I miss interesting topics. Thank you

Paolo, I really don't know when I will be able to finish up the African Mask tutorial. We have had a very hard summer ... One More Apology ... My husband has had three terrible bouts of pnuemonia all causing hospital stays, all in a 60 day period and right now he has been fighting broncitis for about four days. We are hoping that it won't go into the lungs for another ER trip. So until he's situation settles down or gets resolved, one way or the other, I simply have not had a free moment. The tutorial is carefully stored away so that when I do get 'a moment' it's ready to pick up and repost. Susan Irish

Susan, I'm verry sorry to hear of your troubles; and I apologize to ask about your tutorial in this moment. I didn't imagine what's happening. As I told in my previous post, I have not the time to check the forum regularly and I miss the thread about your problems. I hope your husband recover in a short time. My best whishes for both. All the best. Paolo

| This is good as some one refered to my mask as an African mask I supose it looks like that in the rough stage. I did a simple tutorial on how I do masks and posted it on WCI. Susans works are much more detailed and better tutorials on any subject than mine. Highly recommend her tutoials for anyone. My effort was to introduce the idea of working with green wood as an option. Masks and bowls and spoons, done in green wood is the method I prefer. Thanks for your responce and clearing this up.... H

![]() Hello Susan, Wow, what a wonderfully detailed tutorial. As others have already stated, I too, am very appreciative of all the personal time energy you put into making this such a wonderful step-by-step. I recentently purchased your book, before finding this tutorial, and between the two I should have no problems in doing a Spirit Man. Again, many thanks. If you did not have to stop and take photos and write up the steps what would estimate the start to finish carving time to be? Ron Eugene, OR

Ron, I really have no idea. I would guess about three days of a few hours carving each day. But honestly it has been so very long since I was in a position to just sit and carve for myself without photos and text that I really am just guess. Any more if I do carve and plan to show anyone outside of the studio that carving the first question I am going to get back is "Where are the instructions, Susan?" So around the studio if I am picking up wood or tools in one hand I have my camera in the other. Susan

Greetings Susan! Thank you so much for warm note and 'best guess'. Since I have never attemped such a project your 'best guess' is a lot closer that my un-educated guess would have been. One of these days (I'm a great procrastinator) I'll have to try my hand at carving one of these fellows - they look so interesting. I will need to follow you wonderful step-by-step to keep me on the right path though. Again, my thanks.
