Question how to preserve a wood carved walking stick

Hi,
My son carved a walking stick for a Christmas present and we are wondering the best way to preserve the wood. Do we put Lynn seed Oil on it or use a some type of varnish? We are in a bit of a rush ... this has to be done and still have time to mail.

Thanks for any help...

Maureen

It's going to depend on if that is a "working" walking stick or one used more for show. Poly or lacquer will work for one used around the mall but if you are going hiking through heavy brush, rocky terrain or wet areas, then it's time for a joiled linseed oil (BLO) finish.

I don't like that stuff but it is great for rough use. And if nicks and scratches show up, they can be fixed with a simple re application. I suppose any of the oil finishes would work, but BLO is an old standby for tool handles of al kinds.

I have used almost everything over the years. The finish I use on canes and walking sticks is Helmsmen Spar varnish. I use I thin it 50% for the first 2 coats and the 1 or 2 coats of varnish. The thinned mix soaks deeper in to the wood. Now this is just what I like best. There may be others that like oils best.

I use linseed oil if I am going to use the stick on the terrain but for show I use poly.

The Diamond Willow Shop, a block down my street, uses Minwax Tung Oil finish for hundreds of hiking sticks and canes, every year. That's what my kids got for Christmas last year. They got to cherry-pick a stack of 100+ possible sticks. They do the 'Grouse Grind' on Vancouver's North Shore.

On the other hand, it the stick gets so used and bashed up, is there no beauty in use?
Otherwise, hang it on the bathroom wall. Yes?.
