I feel like I have just evesdropped on two world leaders having a private conversation, and in my sight you both are, judging by your works. I don't think I ever read a paragraph so profound as what you wrote Mark, Its been so easy for me to be intimidated by yours and Tony's works, Lynns Caracatures, Nancy's Santas, Ash's reliefs and other notibles on this board, I shrank back to come and read all the new posts several times a day. After reading and hearing what you said, I'll say, I think you gave new meaning to my life.
Thank you, Earl

I guess this topic did wander off a bit sorry about that Dennis and BTW welcome to the forum. Please be sure to keep us updated on your progress on the BW painting.

Mark, you and your work are an inspiration. I like to read your posts as much as look at your carvings that you share. I only meant or used the word "Level" as a compliment to the quality of your fantastic bird carvings. in fact all of your work. We all have favorite carvers / artists we admire or aspire to be like or imitate and your work is one of mine for sure.

Earl,,,Thank you,,,I had to go back and see just what it was I rambled on about.Don't know what to say( give me a minute, I'll probably think of something )
O.K. here goes!
Never be intimidated by ANYONE! Never!Jump in and ask, poke, prod question everyone and anything about everything. You want to learn, you have to ask.You want to carve, you have to try. There are no deep dark secrets, mysterious techniques ,"occult" type knowlege about carving held by a select chosen few. This stuff has been done for centuries, by guys with much cruder tools than we have access to today. Those on who's shoulders we stand had to first make their chisels,or paint brushes, grind pigments to make paint. We learn from them , just as we do today from each other. If I had the opportunity, I wouldn't hessitate to ask Michaelangelo for example,," how did you do that?"And I'm sure he'd answer me.Doesn't mean I can do what he did ,but ,now I have more information to add to my collection and hopefully increase my skill. Never shrink back! Here is a brief ???philosophy I have always tried to live by.Getting a bit away from carving, but I think it applies.

As for me I do not choose to be a common man.It is my RIGHT to be uncommon if I can. I seek opportunity, not security.I want to take the calculated risk,to dream and to build,to fall and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I will not trade freedom for beneficence, nor my dignity for a handout.I will not cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid to think and act for myself. To enjoy the benefit of my creation and to face the world boldly and say "This I have done"
quote from Henri Viscardi
I know I digress,,It ain't woodcarving,,but somehow I think it fits.Thanks for your patience
