Hello fellow wood carvers, sorry for the delay on the tutorial, lets get started! The following will be the beginning steps on carving heavy lidded eyes (a bag that covers the outside corner of the eyelid) Pic#1) I have penciled in where the center of the eyes will fall. Notice the arrows on each end of the horizonal lines. These are where we are going to make a series of cuts to keep us from carving a flat eyeball. Pic #2 )Using a 3mm micro gouge(Dockyard Gouge Set) cut straight into the line drawn, as you near the center line take the cut deeper dont undercut into the nose. Keep it away from the bridge of the nose some, ( one eye between ,five eyes total the width of the face) Pic #3) Another view of the same cut in Pic #2 without my fat hand in the way. Pic #4) Using the same gouge 3mm micro cut down on the arrow mark to meet the previous cut for the removal cut. Remember as you near the center line take the cut deeper. Pic #5) Carve the other side to match. You want to keep carving back and forth on each eye to keep them symmetrical

So that's how you get the depth of the eye socket?! Will have to pick up a 3mm next time I'm at the store! Looks great Mark! Keep going!!! Blake |

Its interesting to see the different techniques used. I was taught how to do the eyes using another method. What ever works to get the results you want, I always say. Keep the postings coming. Patrick |
