The first stages of roughing out from a basswood block that measures 9'x6"x3". What you see so far has been roughed out with a #3 30 mm gouge, the gouge you see separating the hat from the fore head is a #9 10mm.I have 45 min. into it at this point. The proportion is basicly there. Next steps will be taking it down a little farther and then start cutting in the planes of the face and setting up areas to put detail upon.

Thanks for sharing Mark! That looks similiar to the way I have started blocking out that indian mask. I'm anxious to see more steps. Thanks for the instruction and for the advice!! Will continue to check back!
