Heck it takes time as you said to make the conversion, so I really just offering an observation. BTW FLV is not a obscure format, it's what you get when you download videos from YouTube with Firefox and download helper. Also it's good of you to offer to help out anyone that needs it, I would have offered to do so myself but as I recall earlier on Tucker mentioned the fact that his daughter had high speed internet and that he had watched a video so I thought he had a solution available to his dial up problem. Far be it for me to cause you any angst, sorry I even mentioned the availability of a freeware program that can play YouTube downloaded FLV files without having to convert. Geez a fella can't make an observation on here now? Cheers OG |

Hey Gord, I don't think there's an argument, just that Bob is doin what he thinks is best for my personal use. You're right I can see them at my daughters house but am unable to copy them, so I can't really carve along while Genes doin the tutorial, this way it'll be like having him in the room while I do the actual carving. I'm sort of sorry if was me that caused any friction, I just appreciate the help that is offered, Thanks again Bob. Cliff |

I never intended for an argument Old Gord. I am a really peaceful guy. I just made a statement. Sorry if it came across the wrong way. I do training videos for graphic artists quite often. You would think that someone that uses a computer for a living would be quite computer literate, right? Not true. So I just try to take things to the lowest common denominator. There is nothing wrong with your selection of software. I own the real Flash and use a third party program all the time, FLV Player. I hope you understand my drive for simplicity. |

Thanks for the link Bob. Just watched all of the videos for the Hobo. And I've got to say, Great stuff Gene! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I made a note of your YouTube name, Whittler0507", and intend to watch everything you've made. Again, thank you so much. What fun!!

Gene makes it look easy, right? Ha . . . Tokk me forever to find that knife. I ordered 2 but they were the new ones, Ron Wells/Mike Shipley. Not the same. After I got the one Gene uses I became a better carver(just joking), but it is a beautiful knife to use. Anyone ever notice the new Shipley version have thicker blades? Bob |

Well I'll be darned. I also bought 2 of those knives that Gene uses but apparently not the right ones. Mine have initials on them both RW/MS. Did I by chance get ripped off here? If so, where the heck do I get the right ones? Cliff |

I bought three of the new ones, different blade lengths. I was wondering what folks were talking about, the thin blade slicing thru the wood so easy. I did my first couple of flat plane carvings with a Denny knife and these new RW/MS knives really didn't seem any better. Then I saw a set on Ebay. I won the auction. Wow, the blades were so much thinner, and really did slice thru the wood. I must have looked like Gene Messer slicing thru that stuff. They are so much easier to carve with. Good luck on finding original Wells knives. I noticed Little Shavers is out of stock on the short blade. I got the newer knives from Woodcarvers Warehouse. I don't nkow if anyone has the older ones left. I am at work right now. Tomorrow I will get the calipers out and post some comparative numbers. It will be interesting. Bob Old_Gord just jogged my memory (Thank you Sir!) I measured the blades of six knives, 3 old generation and 3 new generation. Ron Wells 1 inch is .037 (I have 2) Ron Wells 1 1/2 inch is .039 Ron Well/Mike Shipley 1 inch is .046 (I have 2) Ron Well/Mike Shipley 1 1/2 is .049 It doesn't look like a lot looking at those numbers but it sure makes a difference when carving. I wonder if Mike Shipley would accomodate you with a thinner blade if you asked? Last edited by BobT; 05-26-2008 at 12:28 PM. |
