folks we got a lot of information posted on the board about eyes, im not saying theres anything wrong with any of them, just thought i would add some quick points i have cough from recent experiences, I've bought lots of current books and learned some, Pete, Marve, Jeff, Enlow, Wolfe, it may not be the method, sometimes its the teacher in some cases.. or learning all the new phraseology.. but other than learning carvings all have eyes, i was left feeling hollow about the subject, I've learned its all a succession of steps, i haven't figured out the best sequence yet but will post it when i do.. for now the biggest help i got was when carving eyes, adjust the bridge of the nose so the break below the eyebrows and the bridge of the nose comes above the eyeball, get a pencil, look in the mirror and place the pencil across your face, then place it in the deep place where your glasses rest and notice your eyes are below this line,,, do the same on your carvings it helps other feature placement,, tip from (Jim Oh.) links to will hayden's tutorials below offer loads of carving info, it helps to see how others do it as well.. will hayden has several tutorials on his web site here is one on eyes , once there on his site you can move around in his menus, its set up like online classroom, http://www.willhayden.com/HaydensClassroom.html starting eyes,, http://www.willhayden.com/Lesson6.html roughing in,, http://www.willhayden.com/Unit1.html

Good advice Thomp, thanks for sharing it! Eyes, after all, are the windows to the soul......and they definitely help bring a woodcarving to life! Another important tip to remember, the size of the eyes (width wise) is equal to the distance they are apart. Often when a face just doesn't look right to me, I realize that is where the problem is! Thanks again for advice and the links, I'll have to check them out! Deborah</IMG> |

A good reference site for animal, bird & reptile eyes is: http://www.eyedesignbook.com/ch3/eyech3-f.html I've found it very helpful in placing and painting non-human eyes. Another interesting site for correctly placing bird's eyes in relation to the entire skull is: http://www.skullsite.com/index.htm "Good references are better than good luck." |

Another good point is make the eyes more rounded . I see alot of people making the eyes to flat you should have at about a 3rd of a circle showing when you rough in the eye area . Ken Carter Last edited by Ken Carter; 11-04-2007 at 09:22 PM. |
