Did the Spanish Inquisition have a yard sale? What's the wicked looking tool that you use for the swivel? Psychopaths could clean their earls with that thing.
1. the pictures really do explain the process, thanks
2. is it useful to begin with, say, a 2" x 2" stick ?

Super tutorial Richard. I greatly appreciate the time you put into do this. In doing the swivel I assume that the tool you used is a self made knife with a 90 degree bend? Did you 'free up' the round portion of the swivel that is on the chain side first or did you slice through the 'squared' part of the swivel first (photo # 11)?

I don't think I'm brave enough to make my first attempt with anything small that a one inch square timber. Well, may 3/4" would be the smallest.

Flyfisher - can you give a good description of the knife stokes used to cut out the holes? I'm having trouble cutting out the initial holes in the chain. For each hole seems to take a lot of small cuts and comes out ragged, not clean at all like yours. I even have larger holes so there is more room to maneuver my knife. Also broke the tips twice (knife has a nicer profile now though from reshaping the tip <smile>)

edit: knifes are sharp, look similar in shape to your picture.
