Gene, You are Gods gift to the beginner carvers! Very thoughtful of you to help the new folks out and to give the rest of us something to try.

My first try was today. Although I live near a golf course, I have not found a stray ball until recently. Sad though the ball was filled with like 3 miles of tightly wound elastic bands which all came unraveled like a hive of hornets when I broke open the outer shell YIKES!... Boy I am glad I did this on the deck... Is there any way to tell what kind of ball to use?

Gene great job on the tuturial, I have been carving golf balls for a few years now and have never tried to paint. The next one I do, I'll give it a try. On mine I cut the cover with a scroll saw, I'll also try the dremel tool. thanks! Oh yeah, I call mine GOOF BALLS lol |

Gene, just took the covers off of 5 balls. The technique I used was first to draw a center line. Second place in a coffee cup full of water, microwave for two minutes. Carefully remove with tongs and hold with towel. Use a knife to score around center line to get to core. Place back into hot water for one more minute. Carefully pry off cover, one side or both, put covers back on ball and bind with rubber band and place back into hot water for a minute or so while covers return to original shape. I did five balls in 15 minutes with no problems. regards david |

Hope you don't mind, but I tried making a one-page pdf of your tutorial and the hints from others. I made it for myself, but hope to share it. Shadow Man Last edited by Shadow Man; 03-24-2011 at 07:01 PM. Reason: Didn't see attachment |
