Default Balance

Hello hello my friends! What a LONG winter its turning out to be! I have missed being online, but the agues of the season hit this house HARD! BUT- I made a tutorial to share with you-I hope you like it! This is my original idea, I feel quite clever, just so you know! It is a fantastic project for all levels of expertise! I have used this same pattern, different sizes, for earrings, pendants, hair combs, pins, magnets...all kinds a cools Stuff! Lots of love!
1234

1-two pieces of flush hardwoods quick glued together
2-a forstner bit was lightly drilled into the surface of one of them to give me a perfect outline of a circle and a perfect center. I cut out along the forstener line as close as possible.
3-sand flush to line, going super easy and very slow, too much off and its a do over.
4-my perfect circle and center point, now the "s" shape for the yin yang is easier to eyeball.

5-cut along your "s" going slowly
6-now is the time to separate the two layers, easy enough on the scroll saw, I go on a slow speed, but by all means, if you feel more comfortable, a little mini clamp works great-watch your fingies!
7-when both sides are separated, you have 2 of each color.
8-flip flop them until you get two y/y symbols. mix some epoxy and squish em together.

9-with same forstener bit-I drill a shallow circle into my backing piece, in this case, a piece os salvaged bloodwood...it goes very well with the walnut and the holly.
10-mix up some more epoxy-mix it directly in the backing hole.
11-your y/y should just pop right into it!Use a small clamp and let it sit for about 5 minutes. I use Devcon 5 minute epoxy-it's a dream!
12-Its time to stick it on the sander and make all 3 pieces of wood flush with each other.

13-now is a good time to shape your piece as well. Dopey me, I took to much off the one side and since this project is all about Balance, I had to take from the other side as well. Bummer, it is askew now, but still quite brilliant. Moving on!
14- a small pointy dremel bit for my two dots and the hang hole.
15-whittle two alternating scarps of wood, black in white, white in black.
16-more beautiful epoxy into the holes and stuff whittled ends in.

17-last time at the sander, sanding my dots flush with the rest.
18-a bit of tung oil, a black leather chord and voila!
19-This version did NOT go through the red backing piece, but it could! It makes for an awesome variation when it does!
20-a sterling silver bead at the end helps you to adjust it to the perfect length.

FIN

Brings back memories Keoma. I attended a military high school and the shoulder patch for the school was the yin yang figure. Well done piece.
