Question How In The World Wooood I Do This

Hi Gang ( Still A Newbie )

Here's what I need to know if its possible to do this:

I have a part of a carving that I want to attach ( Penguin Fins )to the PENGUIN caricature.

I want to run this by you pros be 4 eye . . . lol do this.

I would glue the piece with: ELMER'S CARPENTEER GLUE.
Then I wood gather up saw dust from basswood and mix it up with ELMER'S WHIT GLUE.And the piece would be attached.

Finally, by doing all of this is: to paint over the glued piece and not have it SHOW-UP AT THE ATTACHED PLACE. The paint would cover it up.

Tell me if its a good idea or give me you pro suggestions.

Pleas see attachment below.

Sounds like a good idea but it will take time to dry, how will you keep the fins on while the glue drys ? I would use a quicker drying glue, just my thoughts.

I have used sawdust and Elmers Glue many times to make a filler. Let it dry and sand it lightly.
I have projects years old that I used this idea on, and it is still as good as new.

Hi Schooner

If the wings are thick enough I would drill lnto them and glue a couple of small wood dowels in each. Drill matching holes in the body and then attach the wings with glue. You can then use your filler to hide any discrepancies.

Exclamation I Think It Wood Work

Hi eXPlorer12

I'm going to try your idea. I'm not that good YET to carve the entire penguin as one piece.

What I'm looking to do is: Elemer Glue with Basswood sawdust mixed-in witht the glue. Hold one fin in place with: Rubber Band, or Tape.

What I hope to achieve is for the glue to show thru the paint.
I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks 4 your imput

I think the wings should be attached by mortising into the body (cut a square slot) and inserting the wings into the mortise. If done right, the joint will be imperceptible even without pain.

When using elmers glue as you said I ofter use a spot of hot melt glue to hold it in place.

That's a good idea, I never thought of that. I have used hot glue before and it worked fine.

Smile So Far So Good ~ Sawdust & Elmers White

Hi Guys

I joined two small pieces of wood together, really small i.e.; 1/4" x 1" long.

First I joined the two small pieces together ~ I let it dry.
Next I mixed-up Basswood Saw Dust & Elemers White Glue together.
(more saw dust then glue)

So far its dried well, I sanded it nice n easy. Real smooth joint.
Looking good so far.

Put first coat of navy blue watercolor paint on the jointed pieces. I must say after the second coat its justing to cover the joint.

I throw a few photos of " B - 4 " & after(s) of the jointed piece after a couple of coats of paint and see if the joint becomes INVISIABLE to the naked

Check-out attachment please.

Hey Guys

Here's an update on that test for hidding the joint on my upcoming PENGUIN.

Finally coats on the test piece.
Tell me what you think. I was just concerned with the TOP of the jointing / Not the SIDES so much. But I'm sure after this testing I could concel the entire joint area.
See updated completed test.
