Default sharpening

I used to carve years ago. Always had problems sharpening my gouges veiners v tools etc. I could never get them really sharp. My carving knife was all I could get sharp. I wanted to know if there were any sharpening classes on-line as I really don't have time to go to classes. Any help would be grateful
Thanks

If you can send the tools to Rick at Little Shavers, He'll sharpen them up better than new for $2 each. Once they are sharp you can keep them that way with stropping. Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply

I agree, Rick is excellent at sharpening, just sent several knives to him yesterday. They come back better then new ! (unless you bought them from Rick, he sharpens before shipping them out )

I would like to learn how to sharpen my own. Being an independant sort, I'm like that.
One of these days I'm going to find the right resources so I can learn how.

There is sooooo much, historically, about sharpening on this message board that if your research it you are bound to end up with the equivalent of an online lesson.

Sharpening knifes is not difficult. Sharpening chisels is about the same. Sharpening average size gouge is only marginally more difficult.
Here is the kicker: It all takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE & MORE PRACTICE. period.

Sharpening "v" tools, tiny gouges and #11 gouges can, indeed, take more practice than most care to put it in but are still just a degree of practice away from being the same.

Read previous posts about sharpening and apply the "secret" (practice, practice & more practice) to one or more methods that you find and you'll be all set.

There are also books, videos, youtube.com postings and other stuff that should give you more than enough information that you need to start practicing.

We have all "been there/ done that" cause nobody's tools sharpen themselves...

Good to it & good luck.

RussL is right... It takes Practice and Patience followed by more Practice and more Patience. Then one day you'll realize that you finally have a knife that's half way sharp. Then after dozens and dozens of trials ands errors you may discover that you've finally got a V-tool that cuts decently. And then perhaps one day, if you're lucky, you'll become satisfied with the way that you've sharpened your gouges. Me! I haven't reached that point yet. I'm still practicing!

I agree with Cliff. Mr Ellenwood has it down. I thought I could sharpen real well, then I watched his video. It is a whole new world. Some very interesting techniques.
Right after I watched it I got some cardboard, and am still using it.
