Exclamation The Egale Has Almost Landed

Hi Guys

Working on and trying to carve this new method to me called:

SCANDINAVIAN FLAT PLAIN CARVING.

Man this stuff ain't easy, but what a style of carving. I thought the whole idea about carving was NOT to show the knife marks . . . AHA !
WRONG

I'm pretty suprised at the first results on this egale head I trying to carve. Next step is the painting of it.

I can't THANK YOU GUYS/GALS 4 all the help you've given me in the past and hopefully in the future.

Any and all suggestion on my egale head as far as: carving & paint it will be greatfully appreciated.

THANKS AGAIN

Good [first] job! You're on your way.

Yes, carving in the flat plane style requires a different mindset. The urge to 'tweak' (knock down the knife marks) is quite powerful, indeed.

And, if you're going to label your carving? You'll want to check your spelling of 'plane'... ;-)

Hey Scooter

I got this from: eHow.com

Below is the correct spelling " PLANE "

Thank you anyway for checking-up on me. I need all the help I can get. I'm not being smart. I think its nice of you to show your concern.

I get help from ALL you guys.
  1. Scandinavian Flat Plane
  2. Scandinavian flat plane is a rougher type of carving wood figures. A carving knife is used to create figures in large, flat planes. The figures are not rounded or sanded, allowing the carver's tool marks to show in the finished product.

I think he was referring to the title of the thread...

The Egale Has Almost Landed

You're on a good start with your carvings. I like the Eagle you did. You can't go wrong with Gene's tutorials if it is the Eagle you did YouTube - whittler0507's Channel

Well Schooner for a first attempt you did a darned fine job.
Speaking from limited experience with Flat Plane I would have to say :-Some days are golden and others - - you fall back on standard carving practices lol.
It seems to me that Flat Plane is a style that just cant be forced. It will come naturally in a little time.
In the mean time ? It will drive you batty trying NOT to round stuff off and "fix" those bits that look like a light sanding is needed.
Then comes the painting! I can tell you that:-Heavy coats of thick paint tend to ruin the flat plane look very quickly. Use a really thinned "wash" and if it turns out too thin when dry you can go over it again till it pleases you.
Good luck with your carving. It is a great hobby and this Message Board is the place to get help.
