| | Young Pileated Woodpeckers We have a family of woodpeckers with a nest near our cabin. Once & awhile the youngsters pay us a visit. Sometimes they peck on the log on the picnic table. They're a magnificent bird . Dick

| | Re: Young Pileated Woodpeckers Dick,
Those are nice pics.
I have only seen one live Pileated Woodpecker, but watched him testing trees for a long time.
I do have several Flickers that enjoy pecking on my second story, I think they are trying to make a nest.
Last year one was caught by a hawk and its mate cried for a week; definately one of the most heart-wrenching things I have ever heard. |

| | Re: Young Pileated Woodpeckers Nice pictures. We have 3 hanging around. You sure know when they show up hearing their calls. Sounds like a monkey in a way. I had one hanging on my suet feeder also. I finally was able to get pictures. I lived here 35 years and last year was the first I have seen them. A real treat.

| | Re: Young Pileated Woodpeckers Nice photos. I have a pair that drop in every couple of days. They dig on some dead trees that are at the back of our lot and even get into the compost area that I have. I have tried to get some pictures, but spook them off each time. |

I have an 10X optical zoom, so it's easier to sneak up on them.

Hi Rick,
We have some Downy or Hairy Woodpeckers that wake us up quite often. We have an old metal snow flying saucer for a chimney cap, & they think its a drum symbal. You should hear the racket. They also like the cedar shakes on the cabin.

I will definately be replacing some siding and a window screen because my wife won't let me shoot them. |

Why don't you try feeding them something they like better than siding. Like Grasshoppers.

| | Re: Young Pileated Woodpeckers Great photos. I have one hanging around here too, but haven't gotten a picture of it. It's only drumming on trees and my fence so far.
