A Photo lighting experiment,, on a ongoing project

this harold enlow pattern of hillbilly riding horse, i decided he needed a lantern tyed on a pole out in front of the mule, lighting his way
setup a black shop apron backdrop, all lighting halogen 40watt from the right, casts a forward lighting as if from the lamp its self,.
best 7 of 30 exposures, kodak digital on manual and exposure at -2.0 light filter.
when finished there will be a half starved looking hound walking alongside the couple. and some bramble - stumps..etc..

intended effect, mule and rider both asleep.. dose the light seam to be coming from the lantern?

as my first poll, hope this works right,

The carving its self is very neat plus like you added a lantern which is good but theses picts are too dark which takes away from the good work you did on carving it! Just my thoughts, I do like the "frontal side lit" the best. TnArtist

Nice project Thomp. I like the total front lighting and the blue. I think each has their own nice effects.

One other comment. It's hard to determine from the poll choices photo 1, photo 2, etc....which is which. I assume total front lighting is #4 so that's how I"m voting on the question of which gives the best simulation of light from the lantern on the pole.....the blue is just a cool effect I think.

Number 4 Thomp! It's a good balance. You can tell it's supposed to be dark, but can still see the carving and the colors. Really neat. Tom H

I think the total front lighting is best, but your light source should be lower. Look at how his hat bill casts a shadow on his face. If the light is "coming from the lantern", it wouldn't leave a shadow from the hat bill. I'd say, just lower the light source about 6 inches and it'll be great.
