I can't keep up with Colin but I'm trying. This wood spirit stands approx. 3 feet tall and is very heavy - I'm estimating around 80 lbs as it takes two people to move it around. I think the wood is oak as I have never carved this type of wood before. It's very hard and dense but the colors add to the look. I haven't put any oil onto it yet so the features don't stand out that well. I have a couple more pieces so I'm thinking female carving for my next project. Patrick |

Again, the eyes are so real looking! Great grain in the wood. I hope you post another picture after you put the finish on it. Excellent job....again.... I figured out why the eyes on your pieces make such an impact. They are very predatory looking. The long upper lip adds to it as well. It's like looking into the eyes of a lion! It's a terrific effect. Thor

Patrick that is defiatly oak I know I have been carving a lot of it latley. Looks like it is pretty green wood though. Take excellent detail. I love the way you have contrasted the sap wood with the heart wood excellent job. It kind of reminds me of "Planet of the Apes" Opps I hope that was a compliment it was supposed to be. Really nice job and you are right heavy and even when oak dries out it doesnt seem to get any lighter. Patrick you dont have to keep up to me all mine are commissions I have to carve or I dont get paid. I am looking forward to slowing down so I can carve at my leisure. Colin

I was told that the wood is red oak, and it really took the oil well once applied - brought out all the features and detail. No camera with me as I am on vacation accessing a computer at a friends so I can't take another picture. Thor and Colin, you've picked up on what I heard from a number of people...that my carvings have animalistic traits. Colin, the set in eyes and large eye brows give the look that is kind of apeish...and no offence taken, I thought the same. Thor, the preditory look is a neat way to describe him. I tend to make the mustaches big and bushy which can make the carvings cat like. It becoming sort of a trade mark of my faces. Tom, you asked about the tools I use. I use the number 9 gouge and a small fish tail and detail tool for most of the eye work. The rest are various size gouges. I brought this carving to PEI with me on vacation as I am attending a family and friends gathering. My brother said to put the carving up for sale and see what I get...starting at $200. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your comments everyone. I may not be posting for a while so I can enjoy my other passion - kayaking. Patrick |
