I've recently got the OK on the Wisteria desk. I don't know if you remember this one but here is a thumbnail sketch of my proposal to the client. I've since worked on a full size drawing to show them and was able to attach it to the desk itself and give them the dimensions for the granite top according to my carving.Since that visit they gave me more work,,,, they were happy to say the least. Money,, was never a topic. Now,, does anyone want to tell me how to make a pattern for this one,lay it out, let alone glue it up (grain direction and movement), rough it out and figure out how to do the carving itself? It has to be 5 feet across,, 30 inches high,, project out 9 inches yet be hollow behind to possibly install accent lighting that I planned as well as pierce the piece to allow light to shine through? What do I get myself into? This though isn't the neatest job I now have. You should see the job on the upper west side of New York. Mae West's old house..... Awesome to say the least. I'll be busy till next year. One of the most accurate restorations I've seen to date. The carving just won't quit. Capitals,,staircase,,arches,moldings,bookcases..et c.etc..etc.....all in oak and mahogany. Too cool,,I can't wait. Now if I can get all this other stuff out of the way I'll be set. Till then it's now almost 10:30,,,back to the studio to finish up drawing the 10 corbels I'm currently doing. Ahhh,, the life of a carver! Last edited by mark yundt; 08-20-2009 at 10:20 PM. |

Congratulations, Mark. I remember when you posted that design a couple of months ago. I look forward to seeing it complete.

The layering necessary for that job will be a trip.

Thank you everyone. Yes,, this one should prove interesting. Though in some ways it's similar to the two sets of trees I have done for the kitchens just on a smaller scale. Those were in Cherry and wormy Chestnut,, this will be in Bass. I figured I'd glue this up the same way (vertical grain) giving me some flexibility in the layout and adding depth to the piece. Jobs such as these take time just to arrive at this point. This one has been over a year in the making until all was said and done as sometimes they depend on other factors. Some,, well they hit right away. These realities seem to mesh well and keep the work flowing nicely without fits and starts. There is always something in the wings getting ready to fly.Now I'll just do the 10 corbels that I'm currently drawing and getting ready to prep once I have approval, submit a quote for another 6 big ones for a job in Virginia, carve the molding for the Phila. job which the millworker is sending overnite to me,,and,,and,,and..... |

Looking at some of your other works, I'm sure you are up to the task. It will be a work of art. On another note: Quote:
