Default WIP Santa Clock

I got to meet up with Goody at a craft show, as I was leaving he said, take this I want to see it is 2 weeks. Finished the clean up and Anna , Goody's lady wants to paint it. So I will be sending it out to her.

I also started on a new cane, out of lilac. This is from a purple lilac , just cleaned so far but adding a couple of small spirits into it.

I really like that deep-set face, Ash! It looks like he's bundled up against a hard Alberta Clipper!

Thanks Guys,

I really was trying to get a lot of detail with him, and I wanted to get a wave effect to the hood. This is the paulownia wood. The top of his hood has an alpine type house with a small door, and with the clock makes it look a bit like a coo-coo clock.

Collin the lilac is really a hard wood , very much like a hard maple/cherry. The nice thing is a lot of good detail , the sad part is a bit brittle in spots. This piece was broken and is split , but the insects really added a nice outside pattern to it. The center is the only place with the purple but the natural handle really fits well into the hand. It is carving very clean , but cuts are light.

The strength is almost that of an oak, very interesting wood.

Ash

Ash the santa in the hood how big is that carving? It is hard visualize I am thinking it is a fairly large carving but I am probably wrong.

Over all Collin , about 8 inches tall and about 2 - 2and 1/2 wide. Slighty smaller than the santa blank goody sent .

Here is his finished version from the same blank.

I think you can see a letter laying next to it.

That most certainly is some kind of wood you have there! The swaying purple is most intriquing the way it appears to be woven with "waves" into the wood. Thanks firstly for showing us a new (at least for me) kind of carving wood... and to think that I made it for most of my life just carving 2 X 4's and was quite content come to think of it!

Secondly, I'd really like to thank you for giving me a great new idea with your hooded Santa. I also LOVE how the hood sets the face way on back in the wood which is a very appealing effect. I WILL be soon incorporating that effect into one of my walking stick woodspirits.

Yeah, I try to give as much as time allows on this board but when the light bulb in my head clicks from a good post like this I realize just how much that I receive. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Dave! Glad you like him.

Here is the first spirt on the lilac stick. The natural color tones are really nice , with a wood grain pattern that seems to really enhance the texture.

Ok Ash I wasn't going to ask. I always tell students just because they cut santas nose off the piece isn't ruined. Just set his whole face back farther in the hood. How many noses? That face is pretty far back! we can't wait to see him for real.
Stick is looking good man you pick some hard wood for you projects.

Hi Ash:

Oh he's looking really good Ash, I like the way the face is inset and the hood shadowing his face. I have a novis question does the wood smell like lilac? The colors of the grains are really pretty neat wood, but sounds not for a beginner though.
Will look forward to seeing it before you send it off and will we get to see if after goodys Lady is finished with her painting it? Hope so on both accounts.
Kathy
Ash nice work on the spirit stick too!
