For some time now I seem to be acquiring more and more new projects but not finishing anything. So I am posting these pictures of a lovespoon that still has a lot more work needed. The spoon is 270mm X 90mm x 25mm and the timber is New South Wales Rosewood. This is an excellent timber to carve, it's a bit like mahogany but a little dry and crumbly. It isn't very strong in the short grain but holds detail well. It's very pleasing to carve but I'm finding there is a need for extreme carefulness when I get to the delicate parts. The New South Wales Rosewood sounds like a wood I would like try working with. I will have to try and find some. Looked at you website. Nice work. I also find I have a shop full of projects in different stages of completion. I can't die yet to many things to finish.

Great spoon, David. You need to finish it. The detail on your bird is fantastic. I would like to incorporate chains and ball-in-cage elements in my designs, but I seem to be constitutionally unable to carve them. Your rosewood sounds a lot like my red alder, a beautiful wood, but it takes a lot of care when it gets thin.

OMG David...that is an incredibly beautiful spoon. I cannot conceive carving something like that. The wood is warm and rich looking and the detail is amazing! I look forward to see it finished!

It's nice to have enough thickness to make things fully "in the round" like those little birdies, isn't it? Again - just beautiful, David.

That is going to be one sweet spoon when finished. The little bird on there makes it very special. Hope you post a picture when it's completed.

I usually skip over post about spoons, because it is not my interest......I now totally regret skipping them. I click on this post out of curiosity.....WOW. Will not be avoiding any other subject matter I do not find interesting. This is an amazing piece..... Only problem now is I will be spending even more time on this here site and less time carving..........
