| | Winken, Blinken, and Nod! I previously posted a shelf elf Santa Claus that I carved from an Alen Goodman article in "another" carving magazine. These three guys represent two more trips to the doctor and one trip to have my truck's oil changed. They're nice quick whittling projects for the waiting room provided your doctor's receptionist doesn't get too worked up over the few chips that miss your lap!
These elves vary in size but the largest is only about 5" total in length and 1-1/2 wide with just enough stock on the back to allow it to sit on a shelf. As usual they are basswood finished in acrylics and WB satin varnish. I added some sparkle to the guy's hat with the skinny beard to give him a wizard look....just for fun. I also antiqued the guy with the violet lid with an acrylic antiquing finish.
My main purpose for carving them was to get in some beard practice. I see some improvement in my work but admittedly, I've a long way to go.
While surfing the other night I ran across this link for a shelf elf at Darkwood-Woodcarving.Com. Their elfs are about three times the size of mine but the idea is just the same. It's a fun project. http://darkwood-woodcarving.com/Books/Shelf%20Elf.pdf

| | Re: Winken, Blinken, and Nod! I have been doing a bunch of the Darkwood-Woodcarving style shelf elves and really enjoy them. I cut them from 1 1/2" X 2 1/2" X 6" pieces of recycled basswood pallet stringers. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
