Default Wind Spirit

I realized I am behind in posting/supporting the message board so I thought I would show you what I was working on right now.

OK ... I don't know about you but my walking stick jar is just stuffed full of wood spirit sticks already ... but I still want to carve wood spirits. So I got a set of wind chime tubes and a 2" x 2" x 12" piece of basswood to create a Wind Spirit!

I have carved the face and added feathers to the ends of his hair strands. Right now I am working on the wood burning which I think will take forever. Once the burnings done I will drill the holes for the tube strings. Once painted he is destined for my front porch ...

So where my walking stick jar is overfilled there's plenty of room on my porch and in the garden for wind spirits

I'm thinking about a female wind spirit next with butterflies at the end of her hair ..... but I will stick to getting him done first. If anyone has any other ideas for wind spirits I would love to hear them.

Susan

OOOOPS! Of course, you are welcome to use and carve the pattern! And if you do try a wind spirit please post it for all of us to 'Oh and Ah' over.

Susan, those are great. I personally like the unfinished, there is much spirit there. The burning and paint(?) would add to the music I guess. Very very nice

Susan, those are wonderful!
Wind chime tubes? I'm not familiar with what or where those come from, but they do sound (no pun intended) interesting. I like the project idea very much. You're so darn original.

Thanks Art! I liked the carved stage too but really do want to paint the feathers like a blue jay ...

Thor, they are just alluminium tubes with holes in the top for threading. I got my set at a local craft/hobby store ... think it was Michael's. My set has five tubes, 3/8" in diameter and 9" long ... cost around 3 bucks.

Great job as usual Susan. I think I like the natural unfinished look. Thanks for sharing.

Susan I really like it , but you know you could easily take this one step further. I think I should talk to you about that.

Are you carving the seperator as well? Or just hanging them off the end of the spirit?

Really Nice , wife would like as welll ..... hummmmm

Ash, each individual tube will be hung off one of the feather ends ... five tubes and five feathers in the carving. I want to carve a large but thin feather to hang in the center of the tubes ... I don't know what this piece of the wind chime is called ... but that feather will be the flat area that should catch the wind and make the chimes ring.

I got the burning done so I'm off the find a good image of a feather for painting ideas.

Hope you'll share what you carve for your wife. ( HINT! ) One of the reasons I thought I would post it is that so many of us do art and craft shows this time of year - it just might be a small seller for other carvers.

Susan,
I will I like the chime idea, and yes would be a great present for her. If I can find the time

Right now I am two live tree carvings behind and the staff I was working on has been claimed, and I owe 3 more . I need 32 hour days !

Goody;s butternut staff is still in process and I have a really great idea for a relief carving, at least it should be a great idea, I have been asked to do another Out of the Clouds, and a tree carving with fighting dragons. I really do not know how anyone has time to do shows.

But I do so enjoy doing the carving , the first staff is almost done I hope to be ready to finish it tomorrow. But I will say knotting is not like twisting and it has been a great learning experence.

Ash
