Default Whittling Demonstration

This weekend I'll be giving another demo of whittling as part of our local "History Days" celebration. I decided to do another ball-in-cage project. It seems to spark the attention of kids and parents alike, to see how a ball is carved inside a block of wood. I usually rough it out so that they're not looking at a blank chunk of wood. I drill holes to work from, etc. This year I started shaping it a little with my gouges and got carried away (see photo).
This represents about 45 minutes work with the tools. The demo will use only a pocket knife. This design has a sliding (telescoping) cage. Usually I have the ball free before the weekend is over. This one is 1.5" square x 11" long, butternut.
