Whatyamacallit and WIP's

[Phaeton]

My name is Bill aka Phaeton but I think I lost my login when my email addy changed.

The Whatyamacallit is hollow inside, the stem hole in the top is larger than a quarter so it could be a bank, box or vase. The top of the acorn is redwood and is very easy to carve, you can't tell from this picture but it really is a beautiful wood that looks like burl,the bottom is figured western maple and it also has a nice grain pattern but it's a
very hard wood.

Still lots of detail carving to do on the top yet and it will have a clear
natural finish, the bottom will have a very very light wash/stain of raw sienna.

The snowman and snowlady are from Gerald Sears roughouts, one more coat of matte varnish and they will be finished. The ornaments were carved mostly from scrap basswood and white cedar, the top left and top right are finished but the others need a little more work.

Excellent carvings. That acorn is such a good idea! I especially like what you do with snowmen/women. The larger two look like cartoons as if they could come to life. Great job.

Ken, do you sign and number your ornaments like your other carvings?

Thank you for the kind words Thor, the snowmen are one of my favorite Christmas
carvings now, they look good and best of all they are quick and easy.
I ate way to much last night and still feel a little stuffed but plan
to finish the acorn today when I can move again.

Hey Tom, thanks, The acorn was roughed out with a grinder & 50 grit disk
and hollowed out with a half inch drill bit, the final shaping is done
with carving tools. The wood was from cut from turning blank's and I
used about a third of each block.

Thanks Blake, I tried Lynn's paint/stain technique on the one in the
upper right corner and I really like that look.
