Watch Out!! There's Trouble on the River!!

Here's a peek of my new/old project. As you can see I've taken up antler carving. I'm sure all of you sometimes get the feeling that the new carving you've just started is going to be something really special. Well, this is one of those to me. I haven't started any figures yet but I can already sense that, whatever the outcome, it's going to be one hellava piece.

A confession: What you see in the photos has been setting in a back corner of my shop, under a white sheet, for the past 2 and a half years. Every time I'd enter the place in the morning I'd see it setting there like a ghost lurking, waiting to pounce. Sometimes I'd even pick up a corner of the cloth to make sure it was still under there. A couple of times I even rolled it over next to the carving bench as if I was actually going to do something with it. But, as before, it found it way back to it's corner to gather a little more dust while I worked on other projects. Well, confession is good for the soul they say and doing it publically puts you on the spot to actually do something. That's what I'm doing here. If those of you attending the upcoming Dayton show don't see this setting on my table in a completed form you have my permission to publically castigate me for not keeping my word!

It will be an impressive grouping. It measures a little over 18" wide and about a foot deep. The action is of a Moose rising out of the water, tiping over the canoe. The water surface will be made from acrylic resin. If you look closely you can see that I have already begun to texture the water surface with hot glue in preparation for applying a coat of resin once the other figures are in place. I've done this before an it really creates a beautiful effect as you can see by the Mountain Man paddling down the river. What's going to be fun to seeing how the back end of the canoe looks when it full of water.

So, I've a month to get it done and I plan on starting the first and most difficult figure this afternoon.

Keep your powder dry! No such luck for the guys in the canoe!

You never cease to amaze me! That is a crazy good pc of work. From time to time I come up with ideas but not of the quality and frequency that you do. Thus.... I shall keep my day job to pay for my play job Hammer

P.S. Will you be around your place the weekend of October 13? My folks have their 50th that weekend in Joplin, MO. If I can find just a little time I would sure love to see your shop/work.

Great job so far Lynn, it's going to be another master piece for sure, keep your drive going to get it finished, but like wine, good things take time....Boy does that birch bark ever look so realistic too, great painting job. Bill
